Why is the Porsche 911 called 911?

Among the most successful models produced by the German car manufacturer Porsche we definitely find the 911a sports car produced from 1963 onwards. A range still in production, it still offers fascinating and very powerful models.
The idea of the production of the Porsche 911 was born in the second half of the 1950s when the need arose to replace another historical model of the German brand: the Porsche 356.

In charge of the design of the new car was Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, son of the founder Ferry Porsche. The technical and stylistic layout of this new car was to follow that of the '.356"but with a cockpit suitable for four people. A solution that created quite a few problems in the design of the 911 so much so that it had to be abandoned in favour of a 2+2 configuration that would allow the typical stylistic line of the Porsche.

After years of planning, in 1963, at the Frankfurt Motor Showfinally made its debut the new Porsche Coupe under the trade name ''.901"It was a huge success with the public and the specialised press. However, the marketing of the new car, which started at the beginning of 1964, immediately ran into problems related to the initials '.901': the Peugeotin fact, it warned the Porsche from using that abbreviation, as it was the repository of all three-digit numbers with a zero in the middle (to be used for its models).

Despite the Porsche had initially produced the numbers with a different font and in gold colour, to differentiate them from those of Peugeotfollowing an official letter of protest from the French car and motorbike manufacturer, the German brand was forced to remove the zero and add a 1.911"still in production today. The name change on the models was very quick, yet 85 units came off the assembly lines branded '.901"almost all of them handcrafted.

In this regard, the car manufacturer of Stuttgart wanted to create a series of videos, published on their channel Youtube official, in which it resolves any doubts about its products and history. The first, explains the reason for the naming of its most representative model: the Porsche 911.
