General Motors: Cruise AV will be the first steering wheel-less car

Index

When it comes to technological innovation in the automotive sector the General Motors is always one of the most active companies. It is in this light that the new project proposed by the US car manufacturer at the Detroit Motor Show: Cruise AV, the first level 5 self-driving car with no steering wheel and no pedals, whose control is exclusively managed by the system.
There have been many companies that have presented such prototypes over the years, but never before had any company come so close to realising the project.

According to the General Motors, the first tests of the car on public roads will begin in 2019, as soon as the Department of Transport will grant it the necessary authorisations for marketing. The Cruise AV will be inspired by the Chevrolet Bolt (the electric model known to us as Opel Ampera-E) and, from what has been communicated by General Motorsseries production is already ready to start for the 'hardware' part (mechanics and sensors). For the software, however, we will have to wait for the data produced by a fleet of 2,500 Cruise AV that will measure the capabilities of artificial intelligence in driving.

Cruise AV: how will it work?

This revolutionary project involves a very simple procedure: passengers will simply have to sit in the vehicle and set their destination via the controls on the touch display in the centre of the car's dashboard. Additional displays will be placed on the back of the front headrests so that the car will be controllable regardless of where one sits.
Directions to the vehicle can also be handled via the system with voice commands.
A revolutionary design that will allow the passenger to travel or commute in a more relaxed, stress-free manner and with the possibility of enjoying the view outside.

According to General Motors, this new prototype based on autonomous driving will also allow the reduction of accidents, generally caused by human error.

Dan Ammann, President of GM, when presenting the project to the Detroit Motor Show stated: 'We are living in a very exciting moment in the history of transport, which is why we are happy to start production of the first car without traditional control systems. It is a highly symbolic moment that we want to share with everyone“.
