The world's first building constructed using 3D printing

The skyline of Dubai, one of the most dynamic in the world, is enriched by a revolutionary new building that is only one storey high, but has already made architectural history. It is the Dubai Future Foundation Field Office and it is the first building in the world to be built entirely using the 3D printing method.

The architecture studio Gensler (a multinational industry giant with headquarters in San Francisco), together with the Chinese company Winsun (owner of a pioneering 3D printing technology) have realised an office of 250 square metres where the administration and construction management of the Museum of the Future, due to open in Dubai by 2020, will be carried out.

The sections that make up the structure were printed in China and then shipped to the United Arab Emirateswhere they were assembled in just 17 days. The 3D printer that produced the various sections is around 6 metres high, 36 metres long and 12 metres wide. The machine needed only one human controller, while the on-site operating team consisted of 17 people. Other smaller 3D printers were used directly on site for site-specific applications.

The total cost of the entire facility was 500,000 dollars and according to UAE officials who commissioned the work, 3D printing technology has reduced construction costs by about the 50%compared to traditional construction methods.

Main fields of application

This technology also opens up interesting frontiers in the field of social and emergency housingin particular, where it will be possible to achieve higher quality dwellings with a longer lifespan and variety of uses. This new production system will also transform the classical workflow methodologies for design and construction in architecture. Less time will be spent on documentation and installation, and more time will be spent on design. The file used to draw the design is the same one on which the rendering is done and is then sent to the 3D printer.
The revolution of the 3D printing applied to architecture is only just beginning.
