Containers in architecture: the pros, cons and some good examples

Index

Discussion which then begins with a clear unfounded prejudice. Containers have in fact been used in architecture all over the world for many years, with respectable results, both from a functional point of view and in terms of home design.

Let us look together at the advantages and disadvantages of a housing solution made of one or more containers.

Advantages of the container in architecture

Due to fluctuations in global trade, there are thousands of containers abandoned in port areas. They can be purchased at figures ranging from 500 to 2000 eurosdepending on their condition. They are available in virtually every port on the planet.

The containers are made of steel, the same material used in boating for almost two centuries. The same interior yacht design solutions can therefore easily be applied to insulate, bring light inside and promote air circulation.

Their structure is self-supporting and the measurements are always the same, modularity is therefore automatic. As many as five of them can be stacked on top of each other without compromising the stability of the construction. It is also very easy and inexpensive to make such a construction earthquake-proof by using metal rods or external trusses.

To modify and implement the basic housing unit, it is sufficient to have a blowtorch and a soldering iron.

All materials, both that of the structure and the interior furniture, can be recycled and reused at 100%.

Disadvantages

One must always consider the outside temperaturesbecause metal is an excellent thermal conductor. Insulate the interior or create an external protective structure.

Same for moisturewhich easily condenses on the walls in cold weather outside. Therefore, provide for air recirculation systems.

The wooden floors of many containers are treated with powerful insecticidesto prevent infestation and the spread of unwanted species. Therefore, floor replacement must always be considered.

A container in its long operational life can contain goods of all kinds. Before using it as a living module, the walls must be thoroughly cleaned, the interior paint peeled off and disinfected.

The container walls are very strong, but the roof can be flexed. Therefore, do not place concentrated weights of more than 300 kg in the centre.
