Amsterdam is the city where anything is possible. Not only for the vices and excesses that the Dutch capital offers, but also for the extravagant ideas it realises. The latest one concerns the realisation of a luxury flat with a view of the city harbour built within a old harbour crane. Definitely an uncommon place.
Designed by the deigner Edward van Vlietthis special house was built by the local company Yays Concierged Boutique Apartmentsa specialised service offering alternative, quality urban tourism.
This unusual location, the Figee 2868 (named after the brothers and owners of the Haarlemsche Machinefabriekthe company that built it), dates back to the period immediately following the World War II, and is within the eastern area of the Dutch city's harbour in operation until the 1970s. An area, that of the Eastern Docklandswhich was heavily bombed during the Second World War. For this reason, the Royal Dutch Steamboat Company (KNSM) commissioned the construction of several new cranes, including the Figee 2868.
A tough but fascinating project by designer Edward van Vliet which was responsible for the division of the room into living spaces, the choice of colours, finishes and furniture as well as the renovation, which was carried out in cooperation with the local municipality and an organisation that deals with the conservation of historic buildings and sites.
The flat, which covers an area of 40 square metres, is about 50 metres high, is arranged on several floors, with large windows allowing a breathtaking view of the entire capital, and is equipped with a bedroom with a double bed, a kitchen, a living room and a bathroom with bath and shower.
Consisting of three containers within the crane structure, the Figee 2868 is also rented out for a few days. The price? Not very affordable at around 600 euros per night.
