Transportation design - 5 caravans of the 21st century

Index

The caravan/camper sector (there are actually differences between the two concepts, but for our purposes they are not relevant) has lagged far behind the car designwhich has been making epoch-making progress in recent years. Recently, however, something is also moving in the world of caravan design. Among the new proposals here are the ones that seem the most convincing to us. To live in the midst of nature with all the freedom you want, and some indispensable comforts. (photo gallery at the end of the article)

Colim, the caravan that folds into two

Designed by car designer Christian Susana is a mixed vehicle that combines a comfortable 2-seater car with a spacious caravan. Its name is an acronym for 'colours of life in motion', a phrase that renders the philosophy behind the project well. During longer journeys the two units form a single body, but once the vehicle has been parked you can free the car and use it for shorter trips, exploring the surroundings, shopping, etc. etc. Elegant and functional.

Here, the courage to chart new courses

In the world of open-air living vehicles, pop-up caravans, i.e. those vehicles that transform themselves at night thanks to lightweight pull-out structures, are a great classic, especially based on Land Rover or Volkswagen. "Ecco' takes the basic concept and transforms it in a totally innovative way. The car design is decidedly original, as well as very aerodynamic, and the solution with which the living module is extracted is surprising. From a technical point of view Ecco is full electricwith batteries that can also be recharged via photovoltaic panels. The body is a very elegant mix of aluminium and glass. The living space is more than enough for two people.

GMC Pad

GMC stands for General Motors Company and is the brand under which van and pick-up vehicles are produced (who does not remember the legendary A-Team van?). The Pad is a concept from a few years ago that is now back in vogue thanks to new technologies. It is driven by a diesel-electric hybrid system that works both for propulsion and to power the living space when the vehicle is parked. There are also 6 square metres of solar panels on the roof for recharging the batteries. The funniest gadget in the Pad is the possibility of varying the transparency of glazing electronically, so that during the day there is a panoramic view and at night there is privacy. The Pad was designed by GM West Coast Advanced Design Studio.

Opera by Axel Enthoven

Award-winning Belgian architect Axel Enthoven has designed a vehicle perfect for holidays in nature. Inspired by the design of the famous Sydney Opera House, falls into the category of pop-up caravans, but does so in a very magniloquent way. On the move it is a simple (designer) trolley that can be towed by any car. Once stationary, the vehicle transforms into a luxurious semi-rigid tent, with volumes and external surfaces worthy of a yacht. 7 metres long, 3 metres wide and 3.5 metres highIt has an elegant teak veranda, oak panelling, two real beds, a compact kitchen with hot and cold running water and a 36-litre refrigerator. Already on sale for 27,000 euros.

BMW Air Camper

The official debut of inflatable structures in architecture has a specific date, 1970, at theOsaka World Expo. Since then, the reliability and practicality of this type of solution has only increased and improved. Today, with an electric pump and a little time, it is possible to set up temporary housing structures to suit every need. BMW's proposal is very simple and therefore very interestingA kind of inflatable igloo that can be pulled out at the end of a day's travel to provide a comfortable and safe shelter for the night, complete with a circular French door and side logo. Strictly forbidden for smokers.
