Perhaps few, however, have dwelt on the design of his shoes. We are of course talking about Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth, for 64 years on the throne of England, who turned 90 in April.
An icon of style and elegance, rigour and authority, Queen Elizabeth pays a lot of attention to her shoes. For more than 50 years, in fact, she has worn the same model of footwear, which her assistants wear for her to make them more comfortable. And perhaps few know that the shoes designer of the actual shoes is Italian.
Made in Italy has indeed conquered Her Majesty, who has always chosen a model of elegant, very sober and certainly comfortable patent leather shoes. The Queen uses them on special and official occasions, to fulfil her royal duties. Shoe designers who designed and made the model entirely by hand belong to the group Ring&David, Italian shoemakers from Kensington. The shoes are produced both in classic black models and in various colours and custom-made to the queen's foot.
A team works in teams, with some craftsmen taking care of the choice of leather, others stitching the shoe and adding reinforcements, and still others only working on the sole and heel.
Queen Elizabeth's shoes
They are made entirely by hand, in calfskin and black patent leather with a brass buckle. The cost? As much as £1,000 a pair, but apparently Her Majesty tends to save money by having her heels redone when they wear out.
Shoes are first tested
