Art of architecture: the Diller Scofidio + Renfro studio

Index

In 1979, two students from the Cooper Union art school in New York met, fell in love and after graduation decided to open an architecture studio together. Their names are Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio.

From 1999 to 2004, the MacArthur Foundation awarded the DS studio the Genius Award with the following motivation: "To have created an alternative form of architecture that combines design, performance art and new media. The firm's work explores the functions of space in our culture and demonstrates that architecture, when it strives to understand the physical manifestations of social relations, is everywhere, not just in buildings". In 1997 Charles Renfro joined the firm's staff and, thanks to his extraordinary talent, became a partner in 2004, changing the name of the New York studio to DS+R.

Today, the New York-based firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro is a certainty in the world of avant-garde architecture and after 37 years of activity in the fields of urban planning, design and art can boast an impressive portfolio of top-class projects realised on three continents.

These are the five most significant works of the study (in our opinion). At the bottom of the article you will find the gallery with the pictures.

Lincoln Center, New York. The project stems from the idea of connecting indoor and outdoor spaces, transforming what was already an architectural complex very much part of the New York identity into a new sensorial place, where the citizen - thanks to the breaking down of barriers between urbanism, architecture, landscape design and information design - can be completely enveloped by the suggestions of musical art.

Blur bulding, Lake Neuchatel, Switzerland. Installation built for the 2002 Swiss Exhibition. This structure made world press headlines thanks to a revolutionary idea and meticulous execution of the design. What is it like to walk inside a cloud? The answer lies in this artificial island which, thanks to thousands of vaporisers, creates a cloud of pulverised water into which visitors can enter and immerse themselves. From the lake shore, the changing shape of the cloud, which follows the air currents of the lake, is a spectacle in itself.

Vagelos Medical Education Center, Columbia University, New York. A total area of approximately 10,000 square metres on 14 floors for a new educational concept based on multidisciplinarity and the circulation of ideas. A concept made concrete by an architecture that creates a fluid vertical space for study and work. With a wonderful view of the Hudson River and the Palisades, the steep cliffs along the west side of the river.

The Broad Museum, Los Angeles. Museum architecture over the past 30 years has generated authentic visual and functional masterpieces. The new museum of contemporary art in Los Angeles fits into this prolific trend with a distinctive style and innovative building materials. The imposing exterior structure is reminiscent of a futuristic beehive. Made of concrete, steel and fibreglass, it is designed to let the natural light of Los Angeles filter into the interior to create a suspended, detached environment that induces a state of alertness in the visitor.

The High Line, New York. A city park built on the abandoned elevated underground structure stretching a mile and a half along Manhattan's Meatpacking district. A smart choice by the New York administration followed by a splendid design by the best architects around. All to build an evocative experience for the citizen of the Big Apple.
