A 4,000 euro prize, the satisfaction of being among the winners of the Sprech Agora Design 2018. The first prize in the Garden Design section was won by Veera Katariina Raman, who took the top step of the podium with 'Parrot'. The exhibition dedicated to architecture and design crowned a student of the Master in Garden Design, organised by the Italian Design Institute. Thanks to the hours spent in the classroom and the contribution offered by professionals in the field, Veera was able to deepen her understanding of the techniques of this branch of design, culminating her personal and professional experience in winning the cash prize offered by Sprech Agorà Design.
Veera, what were your first activities in the field of design and, even earlier, in your training period?
"I have always had a passion for drawing, ever since I was a child. It was the same passion that first drove me to art school and then to the Academy of Fine Arts. Here I dedicated myself to sculpture, and in the meantime I approached the world of set design, driven by the passion of a dear friend. That's how I discovered a fantastic new world that combined everything I loved: sculpture, drawing, music, dance, fashion and history. And I haven't stopped since. Stage design represented the ultimate completeness for me, it was what I had always wanted after all. Years later, when I was already living in Italy, working in television I discovered the world of design; a reality with which, every TV set I design or set up, has to deal on a daily basis".
Today you work as a Production Designer for well-known national TV stations. What fascinates you most about this job?
"TV set design is many things put together. Knowledge of materials, continuous research into new technologies and innovations, technical and 3D design, site management and teamwork. In short, the evolving project all the way to broadcasting. And it is precisely this completeness and variability that still fascinates me after years".
You attended IDI's Master in Product Design. What do you think are the strengths of this Master's degree for the world of work and how did what you learnt help you achieve First Prize at the Spreach Agora Design?
"The course is a full immersion in the world of Product with professors and professionals in the field. It teaches the student the method and preparation of the concept. I found the 4-week individual Project Work, with weekly tutoring by the professor, very effective. An educational experience that certainly helped me in the competition and beyond. However, to enter the world of work, in addition to IDI's Master's degree, you need to add determination, perseverance and a pinch of luck.".
Now, as a fresh winner, what can you tell us about your future work and life plans?
"This award has given me such a boost and an irresistible desire to discover my limits in the world of Product. Basically, I am curious. Curious also to know if it was just beginner's luck.".
