When imagination becomes reality: in Texas, and exactly in Huntsville, a boot-shaped house has been built, made entirely from recycled materials. At first glance it looks like a sculpture, but instead it is a full-fledged dwelling, already habitable and rentable.
The strange dwelling was designed by Dan Phillips by Phoenix Commotion, a company that specialises in building affordable housing using recycled materials. The Phoenix Commotion in about twenty years has built more than twenty environmentally friendly and affordable homes using materials salvaged from the Huntsville area. All of their projects are built with the help of the homes' future inhabitants.
By keeping labour costs low and using donated or found materials, the houses created are truly affordable. Due to the myriad of materials used, there is an artistic element that makes Phoenix Commotion's houses unique. The company targets single parents, artists and low-income families and asks that the homeowner be involved in the design and construction of their home. The result is a person who is empowered, not only by the useful knowledge of building skills, but by the opportunity to become part of a community as a participant.
The boot-shaped house: this is what it looks like
The 66-square-metre, two-level dwelling consists of two bedrooms and a bathroom, a sheet-metal-clad kitchen, a garden and a roof terrace, which can be accessed via a spiral staircase. Connected to another bungalow via a porch, it occupies a total space of 216 square metres. The walls of the house are clad with pieces of wood collected from other construction sites, while the mosaic floor is made up of slabs of tiles and the ceiling is plastered with covers of old vintage records.
