Bag design and 3D printing, the Bern bag is born

The Bern Stock Exchange

The inspiration for this clutch comes from a love of a city. From a fascination with the historical uniqueness of an urban structure that has remained virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages. Berne, with its winding, parallel streets, arcades and narrow bends in the Aare river is - not surprisingly - one of the sites nominated by theUNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

The award-winning Milanese designer Odo Fioravanti has succeeded in the artistic endeavour of combining the architecture of a medieval city with 21st century production technology to create a bag that is a true contemporary artwork. A sculpture made not of marble, or bronze, but of nylon sintered by a 3D printer. The artistry of the work therefore lies not in the manual execution, the practical realisation, the craftsmanship qualities of its creator, but in the design, in its graphic designwhich makes the most of the possibilities of the new additive technology.

The design of the Bern bag generates in the viewer an almost hypnotic optical effect, changing appearance depending on the point from which one looks at it, conveying the perception of a dynamic form in continuous evolution. A wealth of visual sensations and conceptual stimuli that closely recalls the works of the most visionary talents of the futurist school (see Boccioni and his most famous sculpture, Unique Forms of Continuity in Space).

Bag design 2017

Previewed in January at the Paris show Maison & Objet 2017, the Bern clutch will soon be available on the e-commerce site www.maison203.com The bag has compact dimensions (21x16x6 cm) and is easily carried in one hand (a typical feature of the clutch type). In addition, there is a thin metal chain that makes it wearable as a shoulder bag. Buyers can choose from three elegant colours: metallic black, copper and gold.

The wow effect is guaranteed, not only because of the striking aesthetics of the exclusive new clutch, but also because of the special feature of having an object that is the embodiment of a new way of producing art, in what is already being described as the fourth industrial age.
