Wanted Design 2019, the best of American and international design

Index

Now in its ninth year, Wanted Design, the fair that annually showcases the best of American and international design during NYC design week. The event, founded by Odile Hainaunt and Claire Pijoulat, had green and sustainable design as its theme for this edition, with the aim of bringing together ideas and projects capable of protecting the environment and stimulating collective awareness with a view to reducing energy consumption and waste production.

Experimental works by emerging and better-known designers were presented, both at the original Industry city venue (16-20 May) and in Manhattan at Terminal Stores in Chelsea (18-21 May), innovative and avant-garde ideas made of sustainable materials (especially wood and stone).

Elledecor has collected the 8 most interesting Wanted Design 2019 projects.

Tokyo-based designer Yuko Nishigawa has presented 'Possibility tools', a series of ceramic vases and lamps that can be used in various ways. The idea, the designer confesses, came from looking at ancient artefacts at the Metropolitan Mueum of Art.

From Mexico, specifically from the students of the Monterrey Institute of Technology, comes the series of wooden stools with varied shapes, geometric compositions, with a particular search for detail and volumetric intersection.

The objects created by Canadian designer Simon Johns are inspired by nature, particularly the rocky landscape of southern Quebec. Their special feature is their organic and irregular shape that follows the movement of nature. One example is the total black, handmade wooden console, with the lower part representing the jagged lines of the coastline.

Stephane Marin's Smarin studio created the S. Chaise chair, inspired by the rhythms of nature, with thin white lines on a metal frame. The chair was launched at the Centre Pompidou in Paris during the exhibition dedicated to David Hockney in 2017.

Designer Elyse Graham, on the other hand, proposed a blown glass vase in pastel colours. Usually engaged in resin works, for Wanted Deisgn 2019 the artist chose to work with glass, drawing inspiration from the shapes of nature and the colours of the seabed.

Very special is the bench by Matthias Piessnig: a serpentine silhouette, following the shapes of nature, handcrafted in wood made in Brooklyn.

Vases and objects for the home, on the other hand, is the project presented by the Egyptian design studio Luxmar, characterised by a wide range of shapes and made of alabaster. Realised in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), it aims to promote emerging designers from the Egyptian city of Luxmar.

From New York come the oval table trays made of recycled rubber with a polished brass frame. They were made by the Slash Objects studio from the design of its founder Arielle Assouline-Lichten.
