Volvo: 50% sales volume with electrics by 2025

At the Beijing Motor Show, Swedish carmaker Volvo made an important announcement about its future: by 2025 it aims to achieve a 50% share of its turnover with electric vehicles, which in 2017 stood at SEK 210.9 billion.

The choice of the Beijin Motor Show as the stage for this announcement was no accident: the company wants to strengthen its position in China, the world's leading market for electrified cars. The Asian government has announced that it wants to increase sales of electrified vehicles beyond 20% of annual car sales nationwide by 2025 (around seven million vehicles).

The Chinese market is very important for the Swedish automaker, being the largest for Volvo. This is where the S90 and S90L T8 Twin Engine models are produced, production of the XC60 T8 Twin Engine will start, and sales increased by 23.3% in the first quarter of this year, boosting global sales by 14%.

Last year for the first time Volvo sold 100,000 units in China.

Volvo's three Chinese plants, located in Luqiao, Chengdu and Daqing, will produce plug-in hybrid or battery electric cars.

Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, said: "Last year we made a commitment to electrification in preparation for a transition to an era in which the endothermic engine will be superseded. Today we reinforce and exceed that commitment in the world's most important market for electrified cars. The electric future of China is also the electric future of Volvo Cars."

An ambitious challenge that Volvo is confident it will meet.
