Ulf Mejergren Architects (UMA) proposes a public infinity pool in Stockholm

Index

From the top of the Södermalm - district chic of Stockholm - one of the most breathtaking views in northern Europe. For this reason the UMA - Ulf Mejergren Architects planned to create a unique public space, which could certainly increase the attractiveness of the city for both residents and tourists: a infinity pool.

Public infinity pool in Stockholm

The project of theinfinity pool - more information on this exceptional type of pool in another of our articles - envisages a structure that will extend from the northern central area (Slussen) to the easternmost point of the island. This will offer a total length of more than 1 km, just outside the current railings, also blocking the not particularly refined view of the motorway below, which today occupies most of the waterfront along with the infrastructure that accommodates cruise ships.

According to UMA, the feeling of bathing in this infinity pool will be that of being connected to the Baltic Sea below, all while enjoying a sensational view of the city of Stockholm while swimming or relaxing. "It will be an extraordinary attraction for tourists as well as residents, providing the perfect meeting point between citizens and outsiders. With such a location, Stockholm will be able to compete on a par with some of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. It is expected that the cost of building and operating the pool will be covered entirely by the simple increase in tourist traffic that will result.

Technical realisation of the structure

The water in the pool is pumped directly from the Baltic Sea, through a small water treatment plant located behind one of the cruise ship terminals in the port, and heated by the waste heat generated by the machines, thus making it possible to take pleasant baths even during spring and autumn. In winter, the water level is lowered and the facility turns into an ice skating rink.

From a technical point of view, the skeleton supporting the weight of the entire pool is realised by means of a mighty steel structure well anchored to the rock structure behind it. The concrete modules were lifted with a crane and placed on the steel structure. The pool has changing rooms, showers and saunas located below it, so as not to obstruct the view from street level.

As a final touch, the structure will provide a fascinating view for those at sea level, creating a play of shadows on the cliff at nightfall.
