Two 7-storey blocks, joined by a central three-storey block on which a therapeutic roof garden, 'the largest in the world', claims its creator, thearchitect Stefano Boeriwe are talking about theMajor Polyclinic Hospital, in Milan. This is the project for the new Milan PolyclinicThe 22,000-square-metre hospital will be built within the perimeter of the existing Milan structure, among the old pavilions that are still in operation.
A futuristic building, the construction of which should be completed by 2022 and will cost a total of 266 million euros.

The project won the International Design and Redevelopment Competition of the 'Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Mangiagalli and Regina Elena' area in Milan: the new Polyclinicwhich will also include Mangiagalli, Italy's most famous gynaecological clinic, will have 900 beds, 21 operating theatres, 11 delivery rooms three of which are equipped for water births; and two birthing houses: mini-apartments, designed to recreate the experience of home birth in the hospital, with all the security offered by excellent healthcare.
In addition to the construction of the elevated park, which will form a green lung in the city centre, a pedestrian gallery is to be built where services and businesses will be located.

The design of the Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico by Stefano Boeri

The project proposed by architect Boers intervenes in the delicate existing system, consisting of an enclosure and several individual pavilions, by introducing a different intervention logic, based on three main characteristics.
The new hospital complex will be an integrated building, capable of first of all bringing together the two health poles, namely the Medical Pole and the Maternal and Infantile Pole; the intervention will therefore connect its services, both medical and non-medical, with the remaining pavilions, generating a state-of-the-art interconnected space.

The Medical Pole building and the Maternal and Infantile Pole building will form the central block, connected to the remaining part of the pavilions within the enclosure by a pathway located at the height of the second floor, accessible to both patients and hospital staff and connecting the Guardia, Granelli and Monteggia pavilions with the new facility.
The two medical centres will share, among other things, a large garden that will cover the shared services platform and cover the gallery that, on the ground floor, will distribute the accesses to the hospitals, service and commercial facilities, as well as the exits from the underground car parks.

Le new hospital facilities are beginning to reconsider the needs of current healthcare, designing new spaces and facilities that could be used by future generations. The project is therefore organised like a tree, a continuous construction, connecting the new pavilions with the existing building.

The High Garden In fact, conceived on the model of New York's High-Line, it will be Milan's new green lung: it will have sheltered spaces for children's activities, garden care workshops for cancer patients, and areas dedicated to pet therapy, yoga, and fitness for the elderly and pregnant women.

The Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico will also be equipped with a dedicated lift, which will allow access to citizens without having to go inside theHospital; a large colourful garden of music, applied art and readings will be animated by neighbouring Milanese institutions such as the Conservatorio, the Umanitaria, the Sormani Library, the Children's Museum: in short, it will be a large green heart, pulsating in the centre of Milan.
