Stefano Boeri's Liuzhou Forest City revolutionises the way green areas are seen in China

Index

Liuzhou Forest City is Stefano Boeri's design of the first forest city in China, currently under construction in the city of Liuzhou.
Conceived as a gigantic green metropolisThe project is intended to accommodate over 30,000 people, with offices, houses, hotels, schools and hospitals entirely covered in plants and trees. The announcement of the titanic project followed closely on the heels of the architect's famous Vertical Forest in Milan (completed in 2014); at the same time, similar projects were unveiled in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Nanjing, China.

Commissioned by the city of Liuzhou itself as part of the new city plan, Stefano Boeri's forest-city will take about three years to complete, with the official opening planned for 2020. In addition to producing about 900 tonnes of oxygen each year, the project also intends to absorb about 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 57 tonnes of pollutants each year. The occupied area covers about 175 hectares in the vicinity of the Liujiang River and the Liuzhou Forest City will be connected to the original city by a high-speed railway line.

In total, the Liuzhou City Forest will be home to more than 40,000 trees and almost 1 million plants belonging to more than 100 different species. The distribution of the vegetation on the facades of the buildings will improve air quality, significantly reducing the temperature and creating a natural sound barrier. The project will also contribute to increasing the biodiversity of the area, creating a suitable habitat for birds, insects and small animals. Solar panels mounted on the roofs of the buildings will collect an enormous amount of clean, renewable energy, which will be added to the geothermal energy used for air conditioning during the development and construction phase.
