The farm yesterday
The word masseria derives from the Latin 'maseria or maserius' as a fusion of the terms 'mas or maes' (countryside) and 'er' (house).
The masserie are nothing but the emblem of the peasant civilisation, intimately linked to the history of the Apulian territory.
The masserizi complexes essentially arose from the need to ensure better care and administration of large plots of land. These constructions respond to the same construction criterion, which divides them into two parts: the dwelling of the lord, or 'massaro' (person in charge of the agricultural fund), and secondary outbuildings, where the farmers' lodgings and the work area are located.
