The auction house RM/Sotheby's announced the listing of lots to be auctioned on 12 May in Monte Carlo of Ferrari 308 GTS from 1978 owned by one of the most beloved drivers in the history of the Prancing Horse: Gilles Villeneuve.
The car had been given directly by Enzo Ferrari to the Canadian champion to enable him to make his daily commute. A car with which Gilles Villeneuve has been through many adventures: the Montecarlo-Maranelloof 432 km, done as always 'flat out', with an unbeaten (unauthorised) record of 2 hours 25 minutes, the road Milan -Maranello made in 43 minutes or the time when high speed did not allow Villeneuve to see the CHP, which, unable to pursue him, set up a roadblock at the toll station of Modena. A folly that almost cost him an arrest if it were not for the fact that the patrol commander was a Ferrari fan and the Canadian driver himself.
“With this machine - says Mauro Forghieri - Once we were about to run out of petrol. But because Gilles always drove like a madman, we 'punctured' a service station on the motorway, passing it at full speed. I (unfortunately...) pointed this out to Villeneuve who didn't make a move, sent the 308 into a tailspin, took a piece of motorway the wrong way and turned back”
The car, chassis number 21371 with registration number MO 439235, was registered on 30 October 1978, is Dino Red and was his personal car until 1982. When it returned to Ferrari ownership, the same team resold it to an enthusiast from Modena who kept it until 2010, subsequently selling it to the current owner, a Danish collector. Always kept in perfect condition, the car has only 37,000 km. Along with the car will be sold unpublished photos of Gilles Villeneuve with the 308, documents signed by the driver and the original brochures of the time.
A historical piece, belonging to one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history, which will presumably reach a staggering sale price, despite the fact that the car seems to be worth around 80,000 euros.
