There is a place in England worth telling about. It is like a fairy tale suspended in a fantastic time. They are the Lost Gardens of Heligan, located in Pentewan, St. Austell, in Cornwalla true masterpiece of tropiary art.
To look at it, it looks like something out of a Rob Reiner film, covered in a thick green mantle, which gives it an evocative, magical area.
With over 500 years of history behind it, cared for for nearly 400 years by the Tremayne family, these guardini were about to disappear forever in the years of the First World War, when the estate was abandoned and fell into ruin.
The 1990 hurricane also made matters worse, but just when everything seemed doomed, during an inspection by the current owners, descendants of the Tremayne family, a tiny green room was discovered buried under rubble.
A stone fragment was also found among the rubble, with an inscription on it dated 1914: 'Do not come here to sleep or rest', followed by a list of the names of those who had worked here.
The Heligan Private Gardens Restoration Project.
A work team worked for the restoration project of Heligan Gardens, which lasted several years and is still ongoing. The project succeeded in ridding the old trees of brambles and ivy.
Today, this place is enriched with charm: ponds, marshes and sculptures are interspersed with vegetable gardens, woods, hedges and colourful flowers, inhabited by many species of animals, such as squirrels and birds of prey.
On an area of 200 hectares the Gardens open to the public, showing themselves as a masterpiece of garden design and tropiary art.
