Car Design: Michelin announces the tyre that never punctures

Index

Say hello to old scenes from the movies, in which you see a pleasant damsel looking for help because she has a flat tyre. Such romantic scenes will no longer be possible! Joking aside, it comes from Michelin the tyre that never punctures.

It is called Uptiswhich stands for Unique puncture-proof Tire system or puncture-proof system, presented at the Mobility and Environment Summit in Montreal. Although still at the prototype stage, the project envisages commercialisation from 2024, starting in North America and Asia, where the problem of punctures is particularly acute.
Performing the road tests will be the General Motors with their own vehicles. The rubber has no air in it, it is 3D printableenvironmentally friendly and guarantees road performance better than the tyres currently on the market.

The tyre that never punctures has a different structure from the tyres classicswith the tread supported by a complex network of elastic sipes that ensure the carcass and air functions of a traditional tyre.
It took 10 years of research and no less than 15 patents to arrive at the end result, which, in addition to having performance advantages, guarantees a substantial reduction in the amount of used tyres that are thrown away every year: we are talking about more than 200 million according to Michelin figures.

The materials of the new automotive rubber are resins and glass fibre, and its weight will be slightly higher than current rubbers. Meanwhile, tests continue on deformability over time, depending on weather conditions, use and wear.
