Automotive design: trends in the motorbike sector

After the great slowdown due to the economic and financial crisis of 2008-2014 (second worst ever, beaten only by the 1929-1939 period) the two-wheeler industry, which had survived thanks to scooters, is undergoing a paradigm shift, not least because technology has moved on in the meantime and consumer habits have evolved.

Today we therefore have two major trends. On the one hand, the models that are most popular in today's market, those that best capture the public's taste, are the motorbikes with a vintage feelwith morose performance and low maintenance costs. In other words, rational motorbikes but at the same time with a high style content. On the other hand the long-term trend is for a radical innovation that overturns basic vehicle conceptsnot just two wheels; no more endothermic engine; extensive use of electronics; variable trim.

The prototype Kawasaki J Concept is the most advanced in this direction, which it is worth remembering has seen an Italian manufacturer, Piaggio-Gilera, be one of the forerunners. And it is thanks to the positive testing done by models such as the MP3 and the Fuoco that it is now possible to think of this paradigm shift. The Kawasaki prototype has two wheels at the front and two at the backIt can change trim by choosing from four different configurations to suit all terrains and all different modes of use. Four independent wheelswhose position is controlled by a computer, and which are pushed by an electric drive unit designed to ensure a very pronounced torque curveso as to offer great driving fun. The driving position is also variableadapting to different set-ups, going from comfortable, seated, typically urban, to almost prone, typical of supersport motorbikes.

Among the big manufacturers The star of recent years has undoubtedly been BMW. The one that in the 1980s and 1990s produced motorbikes that were judged to be suitable only for accountants has been able to renew itself in a surprising way. First it brought out the 1000 RR, a sports model that overshadowed all Japanese manufacturers (specialising in the 4-cylinder front-mounted engine) with its many horses (190 at 13,000 rpm), low weight (183 kg) and electronic traction control. Then it produced a near-perfect series of models that went to cover all market niches: F 800 R for lovers of non-exaggerated naked bikes; S 1000 R for the super sporty scarenate; R 1200 RS for the grandtourer; 1000XR for the hypermotard enthusiast; K 1300 R for the futuristic; K1600 GT for the exaggerated Goldwing style. All models distinguished by avery high build qualitygreat reliability and advanced engine technology, the result of continuous research by the Bavarian giant's R&D department.
