Word of car designer: tips and opinions from the gurus of the industry

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Riprendiamo da alcune interviste rilasciate da tre autentici maestri del car design alcune questioni di sicura importanza per gli appassionati del settore.

How do you design a new car for a large car manufacturer? In large automotive companies, the production process of a new model starts with a selection of projects from both the in-house design department and external studios. From this selection five models emerge, two are then developed under the supervision of the in-house style centre, the others are prepared by external suppliers. Companies of the calibre of Pinifarina, Bertone and Giugiaro. The final choice is entrusted to the company management, who had the task of selecting the most promising model from a commercial and strategic point of view. (Mike Robinson, designer for Bertone, Fiat, Lancia, Ford and Volvo)

How important is talent for an apprentice car designer? Talent, in our profession, is almost everything. But it is only a beginning, then it must be stimulated, nurtured, amplified, enhanced. And to do this, one has to work with responsibility and discipline already in one's formative years. Talent is not so much a vehicle as a road. (Luciano Bove, designer for Renault and Fiat)

Is it possible to imagine greater synergies between fashion and car design? Yes, this is a perspective of the near future. Fashion could enter into synergy with automotive components that are subject to frequent changes. The average lifecycle of a car is three to seven years, for the chassis and body. But in that time electronics make 12 changes. If you throw in the fashion side, it becomes 24. So, in order to make the car ready to respond to fashion changes, we would be in a new, exciting situation: being able to customise the car like a dress, and being able to rethink and customise it again and again, just like the fashion seasons. (Chuck Pelly, industrial designer for Porsche, BMW, Magna, Samsonite)

What are the most difficult parts to design into a car? The most difficult is certainly the human-machine interface. In recent years, great strides have been made in this area that will allow highly complex control operations to be handled in a simple manner in the future. F1 is the most striking example of this trend. Furthermore, the hand-eye coordination ability of the younger generation has increased a lot compared to that of my generation and this has further changed things.

The second most difficult thing to design is the tail. There are many strict parameters to take into account, such as aerodynamics, lighting, trunk access and rear visibility. So for me the rear can only be functional, looking for beauty in functionality, rather than trying to create a distinctive style at all costs. (Chuck Pelly)

What are the current innovation trends in the automotive field? Over the past three decades, the car has gone from being 100% mechanical to being 60% electronic. With the advent of the full electric self-driving car, this trend will accelerate further. The goal is to replace all moving parts, or rather, most of them, with electronic parts. It is a bit like what happened in the field of computers, with the replacement of hard disks by solid-state memories. The innovation that this will bring is currently unimaginable, it is a real new frontier. It is a fabulous historic moment to be working in the world of car design. (Mike Robinson)
