Flying cars: the dream is about to become reality

Between 2016 and 2018 as many as three flying car models will debut on the market. It is clear that there are no defined standards yet and that design philosophies vary widely, but the fact that we will soon be able to acquire a car capable of taking off and flying to its destination is now beyond doubt.

Skycar. The Californian company Moller International has been developing its prototype vertical take-off flying car for more than 30 years. The goal was to build a safe, efficient, affordable and easy-to-use aircraft, even for those with only car driving experience. The result was Skycar. The latest model has four seats and is powered by four variable geometry turbines controlled by a computer. By varying their position they are able to take off the vehicle, fly it in a straight line and land it in confined spaces such as a heliport.
Cost: from USD 500,000

Pal-V One. The very first prototypes date back to 2001, but the debut flight took place in 2012. The Pal-V One is a Dutch project and is essentially a hybrid that combines a fully fairing trike with an ultralight two-seater helicopter. When on the road, the blades are folded back. In ten minutes the vehicle is able to transform into flight mode and take off. Simple but effective.
Cost: approximately 350,000 euro

AeroMobil. A two-seater model from the Slovakian company of the same name, which plans to launch it on the market in 2018. The aircraft has a very neat design, it is a car with wings folded back and a rear-mounted propeller motor. The transition from car to flying car takes place at the touch of a button and 200 metres of open road to be used as a runway. Flying autonomy: 700 kilometres.
Cost: around 250,000 euro.
