CES 2017. The automotive design show of the next decade

Index

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Nel 2015 – appena 2 anni fa – il CES era il salone di Las Vegas dedicato all’elettronica di consumo. C’erano le ultime novità per quanto riguarda TV, videocamere, impianti hi-fi, smartphone, microprocessori. Le automobili non si erano mai viste.

Today, in 2017, CES has become the show where all car manufacturers in the world present the latest innovations for what concerns the future of private transport, so much so that they contend with the Detroit show (the traditional appointment that opens the season of the world's major motor shows) for media attention and public attendance.

This simple statement speaks volumes what is happening in the automotive world globally. Less and less mechanics, more and more digital technology; mainly on two fronts: autonomous driving and then (since if you don't drive something in the car you have to do it) infotainment.

Consumer Electronics Show 2017

The only real novelty at CES 2017 is in fact the race of car brands to joint ventures with Silicon Valley giantsin terms of implementing the Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that the web bigwigs have already been developing for years in the firmware of upcoming cars.

Starting from scratch, for car manufacturers, would in fact mean losing years and billions of euros/dollars in researchand run the risk of making blunders. Much wiser to ally oneself with the experts in the field, even taking the risk that tomorrow they will - as is their wont - cannibalise the old economy brands. Especially considering that on these future machines the only mechanical parts will be the electric motors and suspensions. The endothermic engine will in fact be retired, taking with it the gearbox, differentials and 95% of the mechanicals of the current cars.

Renault-Nissan and BMW have entered into a partnership with Microsoft to take advantage of its AI system called Cortana.

Ford and VW have reached an agreement with Amazon to use Alexa, the personal digital assistant developed by Jeff Bezos' company.

GM, Audi, Honda and Hyundai enter into an agreement with Google to implement Mountain View software on their future models by 2020.

Meanwhile, some builders play the Silicon Valley independence cardby setting up a consortium of car manufacturers and hi-tech companies to develop open-source software for managing on-board systems. Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki and the French PSA group are already on board, along with Panasonic, Harman and Qnx.

From a strictly automotive point of view, the following should be noted the official debut of Tesla Motors' direct competitor, Faraday. The Chinese-American company presented at CES 2017 its new full-electric super sports car model with over a thousand horsepower and the features technology of the first car ready to be marketed, the FF-91, which, however, during its presentation to the public fails miserably in performing a simple automatic parking manoeuvre.

A great technology showroom classic, in short, as the history of Microsoft and Apple teaches us.
