The Submarine Yacht Design

It is the new frontier of gadgets for the super-rich who own yachts at least 50 metres long. Because under 50 you can't put on airs. So in addition to the wally tender, the aquarama, the sporty sailing catamaran, the inflatable wall for free climbing, today the tender garages of the various tycoons also received a submarine. There are already several models on the market, ranging from $500,000 to $3 million and upwards, and which from a stylistic point of view oscillate between bathyscaphe look and formula one design of the abyss.

Let's take a look at the models that are enjoying the most success. So if next summer in Sardinia you see one emerging 10 metres from the shoreline you can show your friends and family that you are people of the world. (Photogallery at the bottom of the article)

U-Boat Worx Super Yacht Sub 3

U-Boat Worx is a Dutch brand known for its great reliability (and I'd like to see, if something breaks 100 metres under water it's not like you can call a tow truck). It specialises in building submarines for scientific research, and has recently launched its first superyacht line. Extremely easy to drive (everything is done with a joystick), the Super Yacht 3 has a footprint of 7, 6 square metres and a displacement of 4,150 kg. You can choose between different versions that can reach depths of 100, 200 or 300 metres respectively. Starting at 1.5 million euros.

GSE Trieste VAS 525/60

The Italian GSE Trieste cleverly recalls the Beatles' famous Yellow Submarine in its design. Built to military standards and extensively tested on commercial vessels, the VAS 525 in its 8.5 metre length can carry five passengers and descend to 160 metres. It also mounts HD video cameras and 3,200 lumen underwater lights. It has an autonomy of 8 hours. Price not stated.

Triton 1650/3 LP

LP stands for Low Profile and this submarine only 1.8 metres high and displacing 3,900 kg delivers on its promises. The Made in Florida company has really created a beautiful vehicle, with a professional but sporty look, for the enjoyment of three passengers who can descend to 500 metres while travelling at over 3 knots of speed. Cost: $3.3 million, with mechanical arm included in the price.

SEAmagine Aurora-5

Designed to offer passengers a totally immersive experience (it has to be said), the design of this model revolves around a huge glass bubble that accommodates as many as five people (one of whom is the pilot) and allows a direct view of everything going on around the vehicle, which can descend to a depth of up to 300 metres. Displacement, dimensions, accessories and colouring can be customised to better match the mother ship. Cost: $3.2 million.

DeepFlight Dragon

Californian Hawkes Ocean Technologies is the manufacturer behind the DeepFlight brand, one of the very first to have believed in the commercial potential of small submarines, which they define by the adjective 'personal'. The range already extends to three models, of which the Dragon is the entry-level model. A great deal of work has gone into the design, reminiscent of a Formula One single-seater (the other two models are inspired by the world of fighter planes), backed up by the vehicle's performance, which reaches 6 knots, going down to a maximum cruising depth of 120 metres. 5 metres long by 1.9 metres wide and 1.1 metres high: perfect dimensions for garage tenders. Cost: $1.5 million.
