Sarà la prima unità di una nuova classe che prenderà il suo nome e che già prevede altre due navi in fase di costruzione, la Michael Monsoor e la Lyndon B. Johnson.

It took five years of construction and 4.4 billion to create the most powerful and fastest warship in the world, but the result satisfied even the most demanding critics.
Characteristics of the USS Zumwalt
The hull with camber, stealth technology and composite materials has the radar footprint of a normal fishing boat. The cambertypical of the warships of past centuries, consists of designing the hull so that it is as wide as possible at the waterline, narrowing the outline as you go up. Stealth technology is the same as that successfully applied in aeronautics and for the first time is being used in the naval field. The deckhousethe command turret, is made of composite materials that absorb radar waves instead of repelling them.
The AGS system uses bullet-rockets weighing 11 kilos, with a range of 63 miles (116 km). The barrel of the AGS is water-cooled and the rate of fire is ten rounds per minute per weapon.
I conventional missiles launched from the pods are suitable for hitting targets both above and below the sea. With an average range of 100 miles (185 km).
I Tomahawk cruise missiles I can reach targets 2,500 km away.
I electromagnetic cannons have already been tested and proven, and are just waiting to be mounted on the Zumwalt (or have already been and not told, you know how the military is). They fire tungsten bullets travelling at mack 7, which is seven times the speed of sound, i.e. over 8,000 km/h.
From defensive point of view the Zumwalt is equipped with laser weapons designed to shoot down enemy drones and aircraft.
In the hangars on board there are also 2 Seahawk helicopters for anti-submarine actions and 3 Fire Scouts, unmanned reconnaissance helicopters.
The ship's power plant is capable of producing 78 MW of electricity, enough to power a city of 200,000 inhabitants, and to power the undisclosed power thrusters that give Zumwalt a maximum speed of 30 knots. Basically like a very sporty open speedboat.
All this makes the USS Zumwalt the first unit capable of single-handedly gaining naval supremacy in a theatre of operations. Or to project power (in the aseptic language of the military it means 'to wreak havoc') in areas of the world as far away as 2,500 kilometres from the coast.
