Yacht design innovation: the UFO project

Index

Come raccontano i due fondatori, Pierpaolo Lazzarini e Luca Solla, questo “Unidentified Floating Object"It is designed to be a home with all comforts, which can move slowly between the seas, allowing a completely new panorama to be enjoyed each season.

Slowly means about 3½ knotsguaranteed by the electric motor powered by batteries, which are recharged daily by the solar panelscovering a total area of almost 40 square metres, and by two wind generators. Which also feed a water-maker of 60 litres per hour.

As far as the technical aspects of yacht designThe total diameter of the structure is 12.5 metres, the construction material is fibreglass, suitably insulated especially in the lower hemisphere. The interior is inspired by the world of cruising catamarans: the upper hemisphere with a floor area of 20 square metres is dedicated to the living area and the lower 10 m2to the sleeping area. Particular attention is paid to the anchorage systemwhich must guarantee the safety of the UFO in all weather conditions.

The Jet Capsule studio is raising funds to build the first working prototype, which given its characteristics (proximity to the coast and less than 40 hp) could be also conducted without a licence. Considering that 80% of the boats in Italian ports are already floating cottagesThey rarely sail more than 100 miles in the whole season, the idea of the study is certainly interesting and could seduce more than one shipowner (and shipwoman).

Imagine the UFO moored in a quiet Greek cove, or among a thousand Croatian islets, with shore connections provided by an electric tender and space for windsurfing, scuba equipment, and what have you. Such a vision is as close as one can get to the idea of paradise for sailors. And for yacht designers.
