Infinity pool: 5 places where you can swim in the sky

Infinity pools are a new design category of pools placed in a very elevated position, with overflowing water and breathtaking views all around. Swimming in one of these super-pools is as close as one can get to the sensation of flight. The water gradually fades into the blue sky, and your gaze is lost in infinity.

The infinity pool currently existing can range from a few tens of cubic metres, to millions of litres in volume, and require ad hoc architectural solutionsstatic and dynamic stresses (weather conditions); plant engineering, maintenance... everything is at such a level of complexity that they become real case studies, as well as places to dream about. Here are the five most impressive infinity pools on the planet.

Joule Hotel, Dallas. Pool located on the terrace of the most luxurious hotel in Dallas. The pool protrudes 2.5 metres from the facade of the building and, thanks to its transparent acrylic wall, offers a unique view of the metropolis. At night it is a breathtaking sight.

Hotel Caruso, Salerno. For foreigners it is the quintessence of the 'Italian experience': a well-kept setting, with Baroque palaces and gardens of lemon and olive trees; our excellent cuisine; a warm welcome and an incredible view over the Gulf of Salerno. All this while comfortably soaking in the pool.

Nine Elms skypool, London. 27 metres long, 6 metres wide and 1.2 metres deep, it contains more than 300,000 litres of water, thus weighing a total of more than 300 tonnes. A load placed 10 storeys high and suspended between two buildings. All this sounds like every building engineer's worst nightmare, yet they have really done it, in London, in the Battersea area. This is not just another luxury hotel but residential construction, which is obviously not exactly popular. The starting price for a flat in one of the buildings is £600,000.

Hanging gardens, Bali. These hanging gardens consist of 38 pools accessible via a cable car. They are large, multi-level pools, built in curved shapes to fit in with their surroundings. Plus a panoramic view of the ancient temple of Pura Penataran Dalem Segara.

Marina Bay Sands pool, Singapore. Three skyscrapers, joined at the top by a kind of large gondola housing a casino, a museum, a restaurant and a huge swimming pool stretching from one side to the other. We are on the 55th floor of the Marina Bay Sands, where you can enjoy a nice swim while looking down on the super-busy Asian metropolis. Reserved for those who do not suffer from vertigo.
