Design star: the Bouroullec brothers

Nelle interviste che hanno rilasciato si intuisce chiaramente che what unites them is the work ethicthe continuous quest for perfection, while What divides them are their mutual personalitieswhich, however, maintains a constant dialectical tension within the couple. The studio is in Paris and counts, in addition to them, about six collaborators, but the creative spirit is certainly provincial, or rather, to be precise, Breton.

The French region bordering the Atlantic Ocean is in fact the place where they were born (Quimper to be precise, 70 km south of Brest). A land stretching out to sea, where nature arrives in impetuous waves that mould the souls of men, pushing them towards essentiality. The clean lines, typical of Bouroullec's style, are therefore not just a graphic choice, but the result of a quest to combine elegance and robustness. As the Breton sailors say: what is not there, cannot be broken.

After studying at the Higher School of Decorative Arts in Paris and the Higher National School of Fine Arts in Cergy, in 1997 Ronan and Erwan presented their 'Disintegrated Kitchen' at the Paris Furniture Faira concept as radical as it is elegant that attracted the attention of Giulio Cappellini, who wanted to meet them. Thus were born the first two real work projects for one of the most iconic brands in international furniture design: the Lit clos (closed bed) and the Hole chair.

Fratelli Bouroullec

In 2000, the collaboration with Galerie kreo began, the laboratory space in the French capital where special limited series signed by the great stars of design are produced. People such as Pierre Charpin, Naoto Fukasawa, Jaime Hayon, Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius, Alessandro Mendini, Jasper Morrison, Marc Newson, Martin Szekely, Studio Wieki Somers, and of course the Boroullec brothers, are involved in projects that are constantly moving on the borderline between design and contemporary art.

From that moment on, the two Breton brothers are officially top stars in the world of international design. A status that subsequent collaborations with brands such as Issey Miyake, Vitra, Artek, Alessi, Axor Hansgrohe, Established & Sons, Flos, Hay, Kettal, Kvadrat, Kartell, Glas Italia, Ligne Roset, Magis, Iittala, Mattiazzi, Mutina, Nani Marquina, Samsung only confirm and if possible make even higher and brighter (the gallery with some of their best work is at the bottom of the article).

In their careers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec have proven to be versatile and courageousengaging in projects of all types and scales. From small jewellery objects to the design of large environments, from quality craftsmanship in very few pieces to industrial mass productionfrom freehand drawings to photography to video art.

Their works are part of the permanent collections of world-renowned museums such as the Musée National d'Art Moderne - Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Design Museum in London.
