MYDA 2016: yacht design in its purest form

Index

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]È il più importante premio dedicato allo yacht design in Italia, è il MYDAin conjunction with the Seatec trade fair in Carrara rewards the most innovative projects of newcomers and established professionals. A valuable opportunity - also for the students of our master of interior yacht design - to focus on the dominant trends in contemporary boating and to meet the protagonists of today and tomorrow. The most interesting projects (in our humble opinion) were the 10-metre sailing yacht Tohora (Beginners category) and the 44-metre shuttle Path (Special Mention).

Tohora

Tohora is a sailing vessel distinguished by its clear division of outdoor and indoor spaces. At the stern, a completely open cockpit that covers the 40% by the length of the hull, creating a large and well utilised space. At the bow is the cabin area, with a deckhouse that forms a whole with the walls of significant height, and inside all the comforts necessary for use far beyond simple daily sailing. L'sloop rig with double spreader mast and removable bowsprit promises interesting sailing performance, although the tightness of the cockpit bulwarks, which from the design appear a little low, remains to be verified. Overall, a very interesting and innovative design for one of the most dynamic sectors in the European market.

Path 44

Path 44 is an original interpretation of the explorer concept, ships for pleasure that trace in form the vessels designed to sail at extreme latitudes, in prohibitive seas and severe weather conditions. The solution of the Phi design Lab envisages a 44-metre ship with muscular forms, with volumes shifted towards the bow and an elusive stern, with a helipad on the upper deck. The superstructures are well designed and the entire vessel inspires a feeling of accentuated marinity. In short, it would not be surprising to see her dubbing Cape Horn with confidence. Very professional presentation of the project.

Once again this year, the jury chaired by Franco Raggi, the esteemed Milanese architect and designer, chose the best proposals from the dozens received for each category of the competition. Proposals that are increasingly closer to the real market demands and therefore to the launching slips of shipyards; denoting the excellent professionalism of Italian yacht designersworthy standard-bearers of an industry that despite economic difficulties is still among the most important in the world.
